Make Joy Contagious

A fleeting act of joy becomes contagious and spreads just as quick as a virus. Like singing a song to relieve sorrow, painting this noxious weed is my way of taking control back and spreading joy.

As Covid-19 fear began mounting and anxieties overcame our population, people didn’t know what to do or how to react and stopped waving and smiling at passers-by. While walking one day, I was visualizing healthy white blood cells for my compromised immune system—they were bouncing along with plenty of open space. At the same time, a micro burst tornado picked up 100 tumbleweeds and spun them beautifully in the air. It was magic and filled me with joy and hope! I took some home to paint and lined the streets at sunset the next day, watching as cars stopped & took pictures, families posed for portraits with them and I could see it changed everyone’s mood for the better.

With my kids and neighborhood children suddenly at home, I found myself drawn to and inspired to teach about subversive art and Guerrilla art movements. How art can change perspective and the way people see the world. The children went from isolated and sad to having a purpose and began delivering tumbleweeds at my front door.
